About this material

Writing requires both craft and deliberate practice — not inspiration alone.

Non-fiction writing has a specific problem that fiction does not: the writer usually knows the subject well, which makes it harder to explain it simply.

The gap between knowing and explaining

This workshop focuses on the revision process rather than the initial draft. Students bring existing texts, identify where readers are likely to lose the thread, and rewrite those sections using specific structural techniques. The course covers paragraph organization, sentence trimming, and how to sequence information so the reader does not have to work to follow the logic.

What students work on

Each session centers on a real text submitted by a participant. Feedback is specific and tied to the actual sentences on the page, not general comments about clarity or flow. Students also read and analyze published non-fiction to understand how experienced writers handle transitions, evidence, and argument structure.

  • Six weekly sessions of 90 minutes each
  • Individual text review with written comments
  • Reading list of annotated non-fiction examples
  • Final session: full revision of one submitted piece

Realistic expectations

Writing clearly is a skill that develops over months, not weeks. By the end of this workshop, students typically produce cleaner first drafts and spend less time in revision. The pace of improvement depends on how much writing they do between sessions.

Program outline

  1. Session 1: Diagnosing your own text

Learn to read your writing the way a stranger would. Identify the three most common structural problems in your current drafts.

  2. Session 2: Paragraph logic

Each paragraph carries one idea. Practice isolating and separating ideas that have been compressed into single paragraphs.

  3. Session 3: Sentence-level editing

Cut sentences to their core without losing meaning. Work through specific examples of over-written sentences and compare revision options.

  4. Session 4: Sequencing information

Order matters more than most writers realize. Rearrange the same information in different sequences and observe how meaning shifts.

  5. Session 5: Transitions and connective tissue

How to move between ideas without losing the reader. Common transition failures and how to fix them.

  6. Session 6: Full revision practice

Apply everything from previous sessions to one complete text. Group review and final written feedback from the instructor.
